Lead Poisoning and Young Children
Perhaps the greatest risk of injury from lead
poisoning is to children under the age of
six, whose growth and development are highly
sensitive to even small amounts of lead,
which can leave children with irreversible,
permanent and life-changing injuries. Lead
poison injuries to
children include:
Attention deficit disorder
Brain damage
Destructiveness
Academic failure
Hyperactive behavior
Aggressiveness
Learning disabilities
Neuropsychological deficits
Antisocial behavior
Neurological problems
Encephalopathy (swelling of brain)
Loss intellect
Organ failure
Coma
Death
The United States Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention in Atlanta (CDC) has
concluded that the risk of a child's
suffering injuries starts when a
child's blood-lead level (BLL) rises to only 10
micrograms per deciliter of whole blood. Lead poisoning is treatable in the
sense that there are preventative interventions
for
further lead ingestion and programs that
assist a child in expelling lead that has already been
ingested. However, once any lead is
ingested, the damage that lead does in a
child's body is not treatable, the damage is done and is
permanent.
It is important that parents who
are concerned that their children may have
become lead poisoned as a result of playing
with these Fisher-Price toys, should have their
affected child tested for the presence of
lead in their bloodstream. A simple venous
blood test will verify the presence and
amount of lead contained in their child's
blood.
Permanent damage may occur if
a child, ingested or inhaled even a
very small amount of lead-based paint. The
paint could be in the form of chips, peels
or dust. Children may also be exposed to lead
poisoning, if they chewed or sucked on a toy
that has been coated with lead-based paint.
